MMTA Vice-President/Local Associations
IMPORTANT REMINDER: MMTA Local Association Grant Applications are due by February 1, 2000.
How to Start a Local Association
Miller Eben, MTNA Local Associations Chair, recently sent me new information concerning the local association affiliation process. MTNA already publishes a very short Local Associations Handbook, but they have also added an application form that includes the steps for establishing an MTNA-affiliated local association:
- Hold a group organizational meeting and record minutes. Invite any music teachers in the area. Distribute MTNA membership forms to nonmembers. Include a copy of the minutes with the Local Association Affiliation Application.
- Appoint officers. Local association officers may include only a president and a secretary/treasurer or a complete set of officers: president, president-elect, vice president for membership, vice president for programs, recording and corresponding secretaries and treasurer.
- Decide on dues amount
- Appoint a committee to draft Bylaws and Constitution. Include a copy of Bylaws and Constitution with the Local Association Affiliation Application. A suggested form of constitution and bylaws is included in the Local Association Handbook.
- Choose a local association name.
- Attach a list of current MTNA members who will be joining.
- Send the completed Local Association Affiliation Application to the MMTA Vice President for Local Associations for presentation and approval at the next state board meeting.
Anyone interested in forming a new local association or student chapter should contact me directly for any help or information.
