    Minutes - MMTA Board

     

    November 11, 1999

     

    President Bill Brown called the MMTA Board meeting to order at 7:30 p.m. on November 11, 1999, in the office of the Music Department in the Casebolt Center for Fine Arts on the campus of Southwest Baptist University in Bolivar, Missouri.

    Members present were President Elect Steven Houser, Immediate Past President Marilyn Lowe, Vice President Auditions Rebecca Fulgham, Vice President Local Associations Kathy Miller, Vice President Publications Virginia Schilb, Treasurer Lynda Quistorff, Secretary Ginger Schneider, Certification Chair Anne Manahan, MTNA College Auditions Chair Richard Bobo, MMTA K-12 Auditions Chair Shun-Lin Chou, MMTA College Auditions Chair Juanita Becker, MTNA Composition Chair Renee Waters, MTNA HS/JR Auditions Chair Anne Nagle, Instrumental Chair Marc Fulgham, Piano/Pedagogy Chair Jane McDaniel, and Martha Chesney, President of St. Joseph MTA. Also present: Executive Secretary Carol Borgstadt.

    President Brown welcomed members to the 1999 MMTA convention and introduced special guests Gary Ingle, Executive Director of MTNA, and web site specialist Brent Hugh.

    MINUTES: It was moved, seconded, and passed (MSP) to approve the minutes from the February 28, 1999, meeting as printed in the MMTA Fall Board Meeting Report.

    TREASURER: MSP to approve the Treasurer's report as presented by Lynda Quistorff.

    REPORTS:

    MTNA Executive Director Gary Ingle extended greetings from MTNA President Joan M.. Reist and the Board of Directors. He stated that the National headquarters is there to serve and that the primary focus is on local associations.

    Certifications will remain frozen until after decisions concerning guidelines have been made by the MTNA Board at the December 1999 meeting.

    There were eighty-eight recipients of the STAR Award this past year. Students are given a one-year free membership in MTNA by state associations.

    For the first time, MTNA will announce a Teacher of the Year at national convention. State Teachers of the Year may compete for the title.

    Plans are underway for the March 25-29 convention in Minneapolis. 2000 PHOTOS OF MUSIC-MAKING BY MEMBERS ARE NEEDED FOR A SPECIAL DISPLAY. The winner of the MTNA Collegiate Artist Piano Competition will receive a Grand Piano from sponsor Steinway & Sons. National Public Radio will showcase the winners of the Junior High and Senior High competitions on "From The Top."

    The American Music Teacher January 2000 issue will have registration forms and other information about the convention.

    MMTA WEB SITE: Brent Hugh, St. Joseph, set up several computers so members could preview the new web site. He explained that the site is still under construction and members should send their ideas and suggestions to him. The address is: www.MissouriMTA.org . Mr. Hugh's address is: bhugh@griffon.mwsc.edu.

    The names of winners and runners-up from this convention will be posted. Announcements may be made on the bulletin board. Membership forms and grant application forms will be on-line.

    The membership list will be posted. Members who do not wish to be included should contact Mr. Hugh.

    PRESIDENT'S REPORT: Bill Brown attended the 2nd Annual MTNA Leadership Summit on September 17-19, 1999, in Cincinnati, Ohio. The Board of Delegates rejected the suggested raise in fees for the composition contest.

    VICE PRESIDENT AUDITIONS: Rebecca Fulgham reported the following for District Auditions: District I - 25 entries; II - 1 entry; III - 87; IV - 97 entries; V - 130 entries; VI - 321 entries; and VII - 5 entries. District Chairpersons are: Brent Hugh, Randy Smith, Christine Vitt, Cynthia Hukill, Nancy Drier, Shun-Lin Chou, Marilyn Lowe, Helen Chiu, and Sue Knutson.

    There was a statewide conflict with music festivals this year. It was suggested that MMTA clarify the policy concerning refunds.

    The repertoire list will be revised; some composers are duplicated..

    VICE PRESIDENT LOCAL ASSOCIATIONS: Chair Kathy Miller gave each local association representative a grant application form. THE WARRENSBURG STUDENT CHAPTER WON THE "BEST STUDENT CHAPTER" AWARD AT NATIONAL CONVENTION IN LOS ANGELES.

    VICE PRESIDENT PUBLICATIONS: Virginia Schilb reported that there were thirty-seven advertisers this year.

    CERTIFICATION: Chair Anne Manahan reported that there are 73 certified members in MMTA. Anyone who has begun the certification process before July 1, 1999, may continue with present guidelines. The process is otherwise frozen until new guidelines are received from MMTA after December, 1999.

    COLLEGIATE ARTIST COMPETITIONS: Chair Richard Bobo reported that twenty-four soloists and three chamber groups entered the state-level competitions.

    COLLEGIATE HONORS: Chair Juanita Becker reported that a total of seventy-nine students entered the collegiate honors auditions in piano, voice, brass, woodwinds, and organ..

    MTNA JR HIGH/H.S. PERFORMANCE COMPETITIONS: Chair Anne Nagle reported that even with an increase in entry fees, there was more participation this year. There were thirteen Junior High and sixteen High School entries in piano, percussion, string, and woodwind.

    INSTRUMENTAL COMPETITIONS: Chair Marc Fulgham reported that due to an increase in entrants of eight in MTNA and ten in State Honors, a second judge was hired.

    MUSIC TECHNOLOGY: Chairs Janice Saffir and Diane Hennessey would like the membership to contact them if there is an interest in a software demonstration program at next year's convention.

    COMPOSITION: Chair Renee Waters reported the following entries: elementary - 4; junior high - 5; high school - 2; and collegiate - 4.

    Rules for the Theory Project will be clarified and presented at the next board meeting.

    VOICE: Chair Sharon Gray reported a total of forty-eight vocal participants.

    NEW BUSINESS:

    The site for the 2000 convention is unknown at this time. President Brown and President-Elect Houser will continue searching for a location.

    Members will be notified of the date and place for the Winter Board Meeting 2000.

    ANNOUNCEMENTS:
