MMTA President’s Message
clavier4612@mac.com
Dear Colleagues,
First of all, congratulations to Mukai Kohei, of Kansas City, our 2005 Missouri Commissioned Composer, who, along with two others, received honorable mention in the contest for MTNA Distinguished Composer of the Year. You may recall he performed his work for piano, “Fantasie-Bagatelles on Japanese Children’s Songs,” after the Saturday luncheon at our conference in Columbia, Missouri.
Congratulations also to our four Missouri winners and their teachers at West Central Division. They are: Katie Andres, French hornist, in Young Artist Brass, Marcia Spence, teacher; Rebecca Caliendo, soprano, in Young Artist Voice, Jo Ella Todd, teacher; John R. Ernst, Young Artist Composition for his piece, “The City Awakens,” for clarinet, cello and piano, Thomas McKenney, teacher; Nicole Schroeder, violinist, in Junior Strings, Jessica Platt, teacher. The Executive Board met Sunday, March 12, 2006 in the beautiful, new Student Center at Central Methodist University in Fayette. We will meet again for an all day meeting early in June. We have found this to be very helpful, because we can discuss issues more thoroughly without the pressure and distraction of pressing time constraints. Other state boards also are experimenting with “retreats” and all day meetings.
Our next MMTA state conference will meet November 9-12, 2006, on the campus of William Jewell College in Liberty, Missouri, north of the Kansas City metro area. President-elect David Bennett is working on “mixing things up a bit,” with new formats, novel approaches and different arrangements of our events, which, we hope, will help re-vitalize your interest and sense of collaboration. The Commissioned Composer is Hu Xiao-ou of Kansas City, who is composing a quartet for flute, violin, cello and piano.
Congratulations again to John Ernst who was also named the national winner of the MTNA Young Artist Composition competition. His work was performed at the MTNA National Conference Student Winner’s Concert on Tuesday afternoon, March 28, 2006, in Austin, Texas.
We raised the entry fee for competitions so that we can pay the judges a better rate for their efforts and mileage. This is our biggest expenditure, and if we want to be able to engage high caliber people for this work, the higher fees are necessary so we can compensate them in a manner equivalent to their contributions to our organization. Concerning the issue of monitors (which was brought again to our attention by a couple of dedicated teachers) the board asked me to reiterate the fact that we have discussed all suggestions on several different occasions and believe the most effective solution is to be aware that teachers may trade with others for a more convenient time to monitor, and they may ask other adults (such as parents, not students) to fulfill their room monitoring responsibilities. In general, the system worked very well last fall for most people. We continue to be open to possible better solutions, but know that each teacher must fulfill this responsibility in some manner.
Thank you for your dedicated teaching. We all know how important it is.
MMTA President-Elect
Have you marked November 9-12 on your calendar? Those are the dates of our 2006 conference that will be held on the campus of William Jewell College in Liberty. The campus facilities are magnificent and an ideal place for us to recharge our teacher batteries. Local hosts Calvin Permenter and Mary Davis are working very hard to ensure a successful conference.
Because of rising costs to present an appropriate conference artist the executive board has decided to not engage one single individual to fulfill those honors. Instead our out-of-state adjudicators will be sharing their expertise with our members. What you can expect at the conference is a solo recital from a past winner of several MTNA competitions, a master class from a very respected pedagogue, a collaborative performance and a performance by the 2006 Missouri Artist of the Year.
Missouri is blessed to have many excellent teachers and I will approach some of them to present sessions in Liberty. Last year at the Columbia Conference the sessions by JoElla Todd, Jan Houser, Jennifer Linn, and Kathy Miller and Brent Hugh were excellent, well-attended and on a par with sessions that we expect at our national conference. If you would like to present at the Liberty Conference please contact me at <bennett@missouriwestern.edu>.
Our conferences have become a real challenge for host institutions because of the many talented students from studios across the state that compete at our conference. But we need to keep our focus as an organization on providing opportunities to grow as professional musicians. Why not make a commitment to take advantage of the opportunities in Liberty to grow as teachers, musicians and students?
See you in Liberty!

MMTA Vice-President/Local Associations
and Student Chapters
eunsilstudio@sbcglobal.net
Every year our organization grants funds to support innovative programs sponsored by our local associations – workshops, master classes, and recitals. The following are winning proposals that will receive 2006-2007 MMTA Matching Grants.
Mid-Missouri Area Music Teachers Association will sponsor a piano workshop, master class and recital by Robert Vandall on September 8-9, 2006 at the Miller Fine Arts Center in Jefferson City. This will be supported by a $1,000 MMTA Matching Grant, with local match of $1,400.
St. Joseph Area Music Teachers Association will have their Annual Monster Piano Concert presenting Kevin Olson, in which 80 piano students will participate, in the spring of 2007 at Missouri Western State University in St. Joseph. It will be supported by a $250 MMTA Matching Grant with local match of $250.
The MMTA board also approved new Collegiate Chapter Grants 2006- 2007 to help underwrite attendance of their student members at the Music Teachers National Association Annual Conference, held in March, 2006, in Austin, Texas. The following Collegiate Chapter received a grant of $112.50:
● Central Missouri State University Collegiate Chapter
Mia Hynes, Advisor
Also, grants of $100 were budgeted by the MMTA board to help Collegiate Chapters underwrite the costs for student members to attend the MMTA 2007 National Convention. Collegiate Chapters must apply for these grants through the MMTA Vice President for Local Chapters and Student Chapters. More information will be distributed to student chapters later in 2006.
2006 is promising to be another great year for teachers and students. Please let me know anything about your local associations and student chapters and how your MMTA board can contribute to your success.
Working together, our future is bright.
MMTA Co-Vice President/Auditions
a_minusshoes@hotmail.com
Greetings! I am honored to be serving as Co-Vice President for Auditions again this year. Many of you may have noted my absence from the Conference in Columbia. I had just had a baby -- my first - and so I was unable to attend. Jane Solose was gracious enough to fill in for me at the auditions, and I would like to thank her for the tremendous job she did, as well as for her help in securing the last few judges. I would also like to thank my partner Sara Renaud, who did an excellent job scheduling all of the auditions. She is getting married in April to John Ernst, composition student of Thomas McKenny, and they are moving out-of-state to attend graduate school. We will miss them both, but we wish them the best of luck! Wei-Han Su of Missouri State University will be taking over Sara's position as Co-Vice President for Auditions in Summer 2006. He and I will work with the MMTA Board to ensure a quality audition experience for all.
Please carefully read the Auditions insert in this edition of Notes to familiarize yourself with the rules, procedures and deadlines for Auditions. The insert contains the official Student and Teacher applications needed for entries which you may photocopy. It also contains the names of the various chairs and their contact information. You will notice that we have vacancies in the Chairmanships of the MTNA Student Composition Competition and MTNA Collegiate Artist and Chamber Music Competitions. The Executive Board is currently working on filling those positions, and we will keep you posted.
I would like to thank and introduce the following people for agreeing to serve as audition chairs: Janice Saffir, District II Kimberly Katz, District III Hye-Jung Hong, MMTA Collegiate Honors Auditions We would also like to thank all of the teachers who participated in the State Honors Auditions for their cooperation with the new monitoring requirement. We are confident that things will go even more smoothly this year and would like to remind you that you can switch monitoring times with another teacher or send a responsible adult in your place in order to avoid conflicts with your students' audition times. Please do not ask students to monitor for you. We appreciate this contribution to YOUR organization. You are the reason that our Auditions have grown into such a successful event.

Greetings from the MMTA treasury! We had a very productive Executive Board meeting in March at Central Methodist University in Fayette. I think my fellow Board members enjoyed CMU’s new Student-Community Center, but probably could have done without the horrendous hailstorm. With all of our current bills paid, here are our balances:
Checking: $ 5,042.58
Money Market: $11,604.98
Total liquid assets: $16,647.56
We will have some bills to pay yet this fiscal year, and I project that we will end up spending around $4500 more than we brought in. As usual, a complete listing of expenditures and receipts is available to any interested member.
The Executive Board members made many important decisions regarding funding, including a 10% pay raise for our Executive Secretary. Even with this increase, we may have to make a significant adjustment when Carol leaves the position and we must hire a new person for the job. MMTA will provide grants to support projects given by the Mid-Missouri Area Music Teachers Association and the St. Joseph Area Music Teachers Association. We will also be supporting Collegiate Chapters to help them underwrite the costs for their members to attend the MTNA 2007 national conference. Other projects include a new look for NOTES, and a new design for our MMTA brochure, complete with a redesigned logo. The Board members also voted to renew Brent Hugh’s contract as Webmaster for the MMTA website.
You will notice in other officer reports that audition entry fees for district and state competitions will go up for fall 2006. And most of you will remember that we have a pretty sizeable amount of money invested in CD’s with Edward Jones, and you will likely wonder why we need to raise entry fees (again). The increase is mostly due to the fact that we felt we had to raise the compensation rates paid to our adjudicators at these events, including their hourly fee (raised to $30 per hour) and mileage (raised to $.40 per mile). To run successful auditions, it is imperative that we hire qualified judges and compensate them fairly. And we have found in the past that if we raise adjudicator rates, we must raise entry fees if we hope to have a balanced budget. Consider these figures from fall 2005: 396 adjudicatorhours paid and 10,634 miles! The good news is that I would not foresee another increase in entry fees for several years.
The wisdom of the Executive Board has been to leave our invested money untouched, knowing it will be there should we encounter a disastrous financial year, or choose to fund a major project. Our goal each year is to balance expenditures with receipts, hopefully with a little money left over. As always, we welcome your opinions, suggestions, and ideas.
ATTENTION!
The deadline for the Fall Issue of NOTES will be June 15 instead of July 15. This is a one time only deadline for this issue. Thanks for your cooperation.
Certification
amanahan@coin.org
PLEASE NOTE: The Certification examination to complete the process towards Professional Certification of MTNA will be offered on Saturday, April 22, 2006, from l:00 pm to 4:30 pm at the Daniel Boone Regional Library, Conference Room 1-A, in Columbia, Missouri. All candidates wishing to fulfill this requirement are urged to complete the necessary paper work so as not to miss this opportunity.
Turning to other thoughts on Certification, you may not have noticed the wonderful article by our outgoing MTNA Certification Chair, Pat Tuley, in the latest issue of "American Music Teacher" (Feb./Mar.2006). It is worth repeating some of her thoughts on "Defining Certification." I especially liked what she said Certification is NOT. We don't often hear it expressed in these terms. To paraphrase:
1. MTNA Professional Certification is not about having a college or university degree in music. Having a degree in music does not signal that its holder is a professional; rather it signals that the holder is prepared to become a professional.
2. Certification is not about awarding certificates to only highly qualified music teachers. It is about helping music teachers raise their personal and professional standards through the certification process. The renewal process provides another way for teachers to continue learning and growing.
3. Certification is not an honor or award bestowed upon a music teacher for excellence in teaching, but an attestation that the teacher has met the standards for becoming a professional.
Pat Tuley continues.... "A failure to practice the basic tenets and standards of a profession diminishes its strength, authority and integrity." Perhaps we can keep these thoughts in mind as we encourage others to become nationally certified.
Theory
MMTA Theory Project
–John Archer, NCTM, MMTA Theory Chair
Let me encourage you to add another dimension to your teaching, learning process! Enlarge your Theory teaching as you delve into new performance pieces.
Most of us help our students to analyze their pieces as they learn them. Why not use this opportunity to guide our students into an ongoing theory project?
I like to offer my students a sampling of theory as we work through the sections of their pieces: We begin with a discussion of the meter the composer has chosen and attempt to find the key of the piece. We learn or review the scale, (mode or compositional technique) chords, cadences, inversions, alterations and arpeggios. As the need arises, we discuss compositional techniques. We label the form, discuss the role of harmony and/or counterpoint in the composition - This is especially helpful as w e memorize.
We find that it is also helpful to make a photocopy of the piece and keep it in our three ring binder. This gives us a study copy and a performance copy.
Often we research the biography of the composer. We attempt to fit his life into the period of history in which he lived and worked. Several of our middle school and high school world history classes include composers in their study of Baroque, Classical, Romantic and twentieth century periods. We discuss how his style of composing fits into the period in which he lived. We find photos and portraits and compare his/her likeness with the personality we find in his/her compositions.
Most contemporary "method" books have sections which introduce intervals, pieces chosen or written to emphasize different intervals and it takes only a few minutes of ear training and sight singing for a student to develop skill in these areas. S chool music programs certainly emphasize these areas of aural development.
The keyboard teacher has at his/her fingertips pre-planned charts as resources in the National Federation of Music Clubs Festivals Bulletin and the National Guild of Piano Teachers Guild Syllabus. Check the musicianship and composition sections which include sequential theory, compositional and improvisational charts.
It takes minimum cooperative planning time for a teacher to guide his students into a creative theory project much like his school science or social studies project concluding with a music theory fair. This project should be shared with other students of the studio and be entered in the state MMTA competition and shared with those who attend the state convention. Keep in mind that the MMTA Theory project is designed so that the student may express himself using the knowledge he has acquired at his level of study and still be creativ e in presenting his project.
Why not get a head start during the summer months ahead?
Immediate Past President
A New L☺☺K for MMTA
Our new brochure and logo is becoming a reality. At the March 12, 2006 board meeting at Central Methodist University in Fayette, the final draft design was approved and will go to the printers during March.
This latest accomplishment has been very important not only to the image our organization presents, but for our prospects of securing sponsors for our newly designed and expanded website MissouriMTA.org. Along with clarification about who we are, new information about the website is featured on the brochure, as well as the new logo and other attractive design elements.
The new brochure which includes the logo will be printed in two colors, green and black, on No. 10 glossy paper stock. The new logo will be printed on our official MMTA stationary and incorporated into the redesigned website by the end of this fiscal year.
If you have not taken the opportunity to visit our website recently, I strongly urge you to do so. While it is still a work in progress, you will find many upgrades, new links, and a much better navigation system.
As to what the new design and expansion of the website is doing for us: the new “Find a Teacher” program places emphasis on our teachers’ studios with its ability to connect students directly to teachers; since the initiation of “Classical Music News” accompanied by the continual updating of that news, visits to our MissouriMTA.org has doubled; and, new sponsors are being attracted to support MMTA.
If you would like to become a sponsor of the website, you will not only receive the free link in “Find a Teacher,” but also the same visibility as the sponsors now listed on the website. And the sponsorship is just half the annual fee of our business sponsors. Businesses pay $50.00; you pay $25.00. Check it out. It could be well worth the extra coverage.
For information about how becoming a sponsor for our website can increase your visibility on the website and help you in your business, contact Webmaster Brent Hugh: brent@brenthugh.com.
For information about how to become a sponsor, contact Kathy Miller, Publicity and Public Relations Vice President: kmiller@cablemo.net. She can send you our new brochure along with a list of prices for becoming a sponsor.
