At this time of year most music teachers are guiding their students toward their best effort performances in a variety of musical opportunities. Recitals, Guild, concerti performances, Missouri High School Activities Music Festivals, pre-contest festivals, and concluding academic year studio and degree recitals are just a few of the spring music opportunities. We know that these opportunities are top motivators. We know we are teaching the pursuit of excellence, knowledge, and pride. It's serious business.
Music performances are the tip of the support iceberg. However, relatives, teachers, and friends have devoted hours, years, support, and considerable financial contribution toward each single performer's participation. I believe an emotional and intellectual bonding occurs deep within the soul.
My wife, Jan, received a video today of one of her students performing a piano concerto with the Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville orchestra. This student has not studied with Jan in over eight years and is now married and pursuing an advanced degree in piano and chamber music. The video had a written note from the performer's mother conveying a deep heartfelt thank you to Jan.
Years ago I was a college marching and concert band director. We had no scholarships, no money, no practice field, and yet, somehow we organized new marching shows for every home game, performed music that was arranged by me from cassettes given to me by the band members. This was basically an African-American group of college musicians guided by me, an old white musician. We worked hard! Now, years later when we meet on the street or at gatherings, we hug and start to cry real tears. Many of the experiences we lived through bordered on the absurd, but we had a wonderful time together.
Music is that bond between the emotion and the intellect. In our roles as guiders, supporters, and musicians we need to always wade deeper into the awareness and learning pool. We owe our students an honest effort.

Congratulations to Jennifer Linn for accepting the position of MTNA Student Composition Chair. Welcome and thank you for your willingness to take on this responsibility. Also a "thank-you" goes to Mary Davis and Ellen Bottorff who will act as Co-Vice-Presidents for Auditions to fill out the term of Brent Hugh.
Hope I got to see you at the MTNA National Conference. And I hope I get to see you at the MMTA State Conference.
Please take care.

A LITTLE FORESHADOWING for MMTA CONFERENCE 2002
There is exciting news from the National Conference in Cincinnati! West Central had two winners in the Collegiate Competition, Kory Bickel in voice and a senior from the University of Missouri and Amir Khosrowpour in piano and a junior from the University of Kansas. I had the privilege of hearing Amir's absolutely riveting performance at the competition, and both his and Kory's exciting presentations at the general meeting. For his accomplishment, Amir received a $40,000 grand from the Steinway company!
We have invited both of them to this year's Conference. To date, Amir along with his teacher, Jack Winerock, has accepted the invitation. Their session will focus on the kind of preparation that goes into preparing a student for such a high level competition. This is information Independent Music Teachers can use on all instruments as we prepare our students for a performance where playing is evaluated by a judge. And of course, Amir will play for us. You don't want to miss this session presented by two delightful people.
Of special note: A brief bio of William Wellborn, our 2002 guest artist from San Francisco Conservatory is also in this issue (p. 21). (A more complete bio will appear in the next Conference issue.) Dr. Wellborn is well known on the west coast, particularly in the San Francisco Bay area where he hosted a very popular radio program for several years. He was at the Conference in Cincinnati and I truly look forward to spreading the word about him throughout the Midwest. This warm, personable artist has impressive performance background and much experience in working with students.
This summer Dr. Wellborn is conducting a European tour titled "The World of Liszt." Information about this can be found in NOTES for your consideration (p. 36). And there is a description in this newsletter of the session on Liszt which Dr. Wellborn will present on Friday at the Conference.
Look for a different perspective on the use of technology in your studio in Kirksville Technology Chair Janice Saffir who is the wonderful on-site Conference Chair in Kirksville will work with Kathy Miller to present this.
Mo Western
Janice gave an excellent technology session for MTNA in Cincinnati this past week. You will have an opportunity to sign up for their special presentation when you enroll for the Conference.
We are still working out other topics for sessions, and as usual your input is invaluable. Do you have either a session or an idea for a session to present?
Finally, we will be in a beautiful new music building in Kirksville. Much of the moving from old to new was done over spring break while many of us were at the Conference in Cincinnati. With the educational and inspirational ideas such a trip brings, we are planning a great Conference for you!

The budget for FY2002-2003 was approved at the recent MMTA Board meeting, with an estimated $37,430 in income, and $37,400 in disbursements. Our current bank account balances are as follows:
Checking--$6,448.46
Money Market--$12,593.59
CD#1--$21,123.89
CD#2--$17,945.28
This gives us a total of $58,111.22 in assets. We will continue to hold money in our savings accounts where it can gain interest and be used for those years when convention costs rise, the economy worsens, etc. It was also decided at the Board meeting to give the local Warrensburg chapter a $250 grant, and to raise the salary of the Executive Secretary to $4800 per year (she will no longer be paid hourly). This action was long overdue, and we thank Carol for her years of hard work and dedication to MMTA.
This fiscal year ends April 30th, so please get any leftover bills to me as
soon as possible. Happy Spring!

This is a great opportunity for teachers in the Kirksville area to take advantage of their proximity to an examination center to get this out of the way. If there are private teachers in the area who are not members of MMTA, they too can sign up to take the exam(s). Non members pay a higher fee.
All applications are handled through National, but I will be happy to talk to anyone wanting more information. My number is (573) 442-8564, or send me an e-mail: amanahan@coin.org

The Students of Franz Liszt
A session to be presented by Dr. William Wellborn
at the Kirksville MMTA Conference
Without doubt one of the most extraordinary musicians of the nineteenth-century, Franz Liszt was also one of the century's most celebrated pedagogues. His pupils included legendary artists such as Moriz Rosenthal, Eugene d'Albert, Arthur Freidheim, and Emil von Sauer, all of them among the most celebrated figures of their time. This presentation presents an overview of some of Liszt's most noted pupils and features many rare recordings by these legendary artists of the past. The lecture also includes numerous references and quotations about the teachings of Liszt, as noted by the participants from many of his masterclasses. Featured works and artists include:
1) Liszt: Ricordanza; Mendelssohn-Liszt: On Wings of Song (von Sauer)
2) Chopin: Mazurkas, Etudes; Liszt: Soiree de Vienne (Rosentahl)
3) Beethoven: selections from the Sonatas (Frederic Lamond)
4) Grieg: selected short pieces (Arthur de Greef)

The World of FRANZ LISZT
July 29-August 13, 2002
Franz Liszt was history's greatest pianist, a prolific composer, and to quote the noted biographer Alan Walker, "the central figure of the Romantic century." To appreciate more fully the music and work of Liszt, Dr. William Wellborn and Professor Adam Wibrowski have organized an exciting itinerary with concerts and lectures, illuminating the most important aspects of the early years of Franz Liszt. From his birth and formative years in Hungary and Vienna, his emergence as a renowned virtuoso, and the romantic retreat to Switzerland with the Countess Marie d'Agoult, Wellborn and Wibrowski trace the journeys of Liszt through the capitals and landscapes of Europe, following his development as a man and musician.
Highlights of this exciting tour include:
Budapest-Liszt Museum, Hungarian dance program
Esterhazy Palace and Liszt birthplace in Raiding
Sopron-city of Liszt's earliest concerts
Vienna-St. Stephen's, Kunsthistorisches Museum
Lucern - Wagner house at Tribschen, Swiss Alps
Geneva - Mont Salèvem Liszt and d'Agoult residence
Chamounix - Mont Blanc, all-Liszt recital
BudaFest Festival and specially arranged concerts
