MMTA President-Elect
Dear readers,
As recall from the last issue the year 2000 Missouri Music Teachers Association State Convention is November 9, 10, 11, and 12, at Missouri Western State College. Ramada Inn will be the convention hotel. The Friday evening banquet will be at the Ramada Inn. The following events are already scheduled for your musical enjoyment and musical enlightenment.
Guest Artist and Masterclass Clinician, Ann Schein. "With more than 30 years of experience on the concert stage, Schein played with warmth and authority, making the most difficult passages seem effortless, and coaxing a melodic unity from each piece.........the audience went wild in their appreciation of Schein's virtuoso performance." (January 2000-Charleston Post and Courier) "Schein brought her Arthur Rubinstein trained technique to Portland from the Peabody School of Music, where she teaches. Schein performed Chopin's enigmatic Sonata No. 3 in B Minor, op. 58, better than I have every heard anyone play it. Her tone, touch and interpretation were exhilarating. The audience erupted in spirited applause." (December 1999-The Oregonian) "The pinnacle of this festival {1999 Great Romantics Festival in Hamilton, Ontario}, was Chopin recital by Ann Schein. A vast palette of touch and color was evident in her opening work, the Polonaise-Fantaisie, op. 61. The overflow audience rejoiced at Schein's playing and gave her a standing ovation." (December 1999 Clavier) "From the moment that pianist Ann Schein began two of Schubert's Impromptus, D. 899, it was clear that her concert Friday at the Austrian Embassy would be an absorbing one. Schein penetrated the realm of elusive emotions that roll beneath the surface of Schubert's music and the culture of Biedermeier Vienna." (March 1999-The Washington Post) The not to be missed Ann Schein Masterclass will be Friday afternoon and the not to be missed Ann Schein Concert will be Saturday evening.
Neil Minturn - Friday afternoon. "Neil Minturn has been on our faculty for three years teaching music theory courses. He has a PH.D. from Yale and his book on Prokofiev is published by the Yale University Press. He was on the faculty of the Eastman School for several years prior to his position here. Our students are enthusiastic about his courses. Simply stated, he is a great teacher." (Dr. Thomas McKenney) Dr. Minturn's working title is "On (hyper)metric Regularity (and ir-) in Music and in Poetry".
Anne Manahan, MTNA Certification Session - Saturday morning. This session will contain recently enacted significant certification changes.
