MSHSAA Announces the PGML Comprehensive Review and Revision Project
Wednesday, September 19, 2007
In May 2006 the MSHSAA (Missouri State High School Athletic Association) Music Advisory Committee approved a plan for a comprehensive review and revision of the current Prescribed Graded Music List (PGML). Since that time a steering committee has been working with MSHSAA to organize a structure and set musical standards for the full review process. The PGML Comprehensive Review and Revision Project has four Phases.
Phase I which is completed began with establishing the steering committee (including the presidents of MMEA, MBA, MOACDA, MOASTA and MMTA). Steering Committee meetings were held to approve the processes for completing the project and to seek the support and endorsement of our state music professional organizations. One of the significant outcomes of Phase I is the agreement by each of the state music professional organizations to take ownership of the PGML in their respective area.
Phase II is currently underway. This phase includes: the development of grading matrixes by the state professional music organizations, the acquisition of all selections on the current PGML, the setting of dates, times and places for each review and the selecting of the review committees. A general format and set of guidelines have been developed for the grading matrixes. Each organization will then add the specifics needed for their areas and categories. Directors are invited to submit copies of current PGML selections from their libraries using the form included in this issue. All of the Missouri music publishers and distributors have been invited to participate by providing/loaning copies of selections that they have in stock and/or can easily access. Each organization will be responsible for setting the dates, times and places for the actual reviews by the MMEA Convention. Those interested in serving on the actual review committees will need to complete the application form which will be in the Convention issue of the MMEA magazine. Each review committee will be comprised of Missouri music educators from through-out the state with at least one representative from every MSHSAA board district. We anticipate each review committee to be 8 to 15 members.
Phase III will be the actual review and revision process and compiling of the new PGML.
Those selected to participate will be notified by the end of February. The new PGML would be in effect for the 2009 MSHSAA District and State Solo and Small Ensemble Festivals.
Phase IV will be the development of the guidelines and procedures for submitting and reviewing new selections with approval by the MSHSAA Music Advisory Committee.
