MOSCOW STATE SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA
Friday, November 10, at 8 p.m.
Folly Theater, 12th and Central Sts., Kansas City, Mo.

Formed in 1943, the Moscow State Symphony Orchestra is considered one of the best examples of a revered Russian cultural tradition. "The audience
was so enraptured" said one concert review, "that it seemed to hold its collective breath between movements." Maestro Pavel Kogan became music director in 1989, and has expanded their repertoire while staying true to ensemble's Russian heritage. The orchestra's planned program includes Smetna's Vltava; Tchaikovsky's Violin Concerto in D, Op.35, (20-year-old Stefan Jackiw, violin soloist); and Dvorak's Symphony No. 9 in E minor, Op. 95, "From the New World."

CLASSICAL SAVION
Tap-dancer Savion Glover with classical and jazz musicians on stage:
Saturday, November 11, at 8 p.m.
Sunday, November 12, at 3 p.m.
Folly Theater, 12th and Central Sts., Kansas City, Mo.
Program: works and excerpts by Vivaldi, Dvorak, Bach, Bartok, Shostakovich, Mendelssohn and Glover (same or similar program for both performances)

Dance icon Savion Glover taps into classical masterworks for his recent inspiration: Classical Savion. As a chamber ensemble plays classical standards upstage, Glover taps out virtuosic transcriptions downstage. The master tapper "brings out the jazz" at the close of the program with his take on Sousa entitled Stars and Stripes Forever 4 Now. "This wasn't dancing to music, or with music; it was dancing as music," said the Oregonian in a September 2006 review.
