The Purpose of Auditions . . .
One of MMTA's goals is to create the musicians and audiences of the future. Competitions and auditions can play an important role in this process, helping to bring out the best in young musicians by giving them the chance to perform alongside the best young musicians from across the state.

These events are "competitions" in the sense that ratings are given and winners chosen. But they are not competitions in the sense of being confrontational or antagonistic. We do our best to make the events a positive growth experience for everyone involved. Making good music is important; in comparison with that, winning a trophy, medal, or certificate is not very important at all.

The Importance of Good Sportsmanship . . .

Let's face it--music auditions are high stress events. Teachers, performers, and parents have put a lot of time and energy into these performances and everyone wants to do their best.

But, taking the long view, musicians need to learn how to handle themselves when they don't play their best, when they don't win, and (perhaps worst of all) when they do feel like they played their best but still don't win.

Please keep the following ideas in mind as you prepare for and play in the auditions:

The true measure of your success in the auditions is the personal and musical growth you experienced in preparing for and playing in the auditions.

There is a large subjective element in judging musical performance. Learn to respect the musical opinions of others (especially including the adjudicators) while retaining your own musical identity.

MMTA and MTNA rules state that decisions of the judges are final and may not be questioned by participants, parents, or teachers. It is becoming increasingly difficult to find adjudicators for MMTA auditions, and one reason is because of too-frequent violation of this rule.

If you feel there is a problem with adjudication--more than just an ordinary difference of musical opinion--please discuss it confidentially with competition officials, who will take any steps necessary to correct the situation.

The MTNA Code of Ethics states that "Members shall maintain a professional attitude and shall act with integrity in regard to colleagues in their profession."

Under absolutely no circumstances may students, teachers, or parents communicate with an adjudicator, either before, during, or after auditions, in an attempt to change or influence the adjudicator's opinion.
